Hilton Head Island Golf Cart Map
Local golf cart rules, official map and sources for Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Golf-cart rentals around Coligny Beach are aimed at short shopping, grocery and beach outings. Wheelz offers four- and six-seat carts for this area, while Sea Turtle Rentals supplies registered low-speed vehicles to eligible houses around Folly Field and Sandcastles by the Sea. For a vacation stay, the accommodation address matters: cart collection, LSV delivery and private-community access have different conditions.
Choose the accommodation address and vehicle type together. Public bicycle paths are not cart routes, and a supplier’s delivery area does not establish legal driving access. Confirm collection or delivery, property permission and every driver’s eligibility before booking.

About this map
This map uses OpenStreetMap data for orientation, not navigation. Paths may be missing, outdated or incorrectly tagged. A mapped line does not confirm permission, public access, a connected route, or safe and suitable conditions. Follow current local rules, signs, closures and property restrictions. Terms & Disclaimer
This map covers selected public roads around Coligny and Forest Beach. Turn on “Roads for golf carts” or “Roads for registered LSVs” to compare the reviewed road lines. The golf-cart layer contains 7.3 mapped miles; the LSV layer contains 8.2 miles, including the golf-cart roads. These figures count the displayed road lines, including separate carriageways, and are not trip distances. Gaps mark sections left out of this review; do not assume a continuous route. Public cycling paths, Tanglewood Drive and private-community roads are excluded. LSV-only lines do not mean ordinary carts are prohibited there; their ordinary-cart eligibility was not established. Check the vehicle rules, posted controls, registration-address distance and your accommodation’s access and parking arrangements before traveling.
Planning a visit by golf cart
Coligny: collection and overnight parking
Wheelz rents four- and six-seat gas-powered golf carts for the Coligny Beach area. Its booking conditions require collection from its facility; these carts are not delivered. Renters must be at least 18, have a valid driver’s license and provide a copy of their auto insurance policy. Ask your accommodation whether the cart can stay there overnight, and check the collection and return arrangements before paying.
Folly Field: check the property and vehicle
Sea Turtle Rentals supplies registered, plated low-speed vehicles (LSVs) to eligible single-family homes in Folly Field and Sandcastles by the Sea. Its published service excludes condos, apartments, resorts and hotels. Confirm the exact address before booking: its main service list and booking selector differ on another area, The Marshes.
Check delivery and collection times against your stay; the operator describes evening delivery and morning collection. Ask about charging, passenger capacity, child restraints, approved drivers, insurance and breakdown support. A cart is not automatically included with accommodation.
Plan the journeys before reserving
An ordinary golf cart and a registered LSV have different rules. Adding lights to a golf cart does not turn it into an LSV. Ask the supplier which class you are hiring and which documents you must carry. Rental conditions may be stricter than the legal minimum; the owner handles vehicle registration, but the driver still has responsibilities.
For ordinary carts, the state’s default is daylight use on qualifying secondary roads within four miles of the registration address, subject to applicable local ordinances. Do not assume that an LSV permits every journey after dark. Check the detailed rules, posted restrictions and property access for your actual route.
Coligny shopping, groceries and beach outings are the purpose advertised by Wheelz, not verified journeys from every property. The map covers selected Coligny and Forest Beach roads, with separate cart and LSV filters. It does not cover an island-wide network or establish access from Folly Field accommodation. Public pathways and beach sand are not cart routes.

Before you drive
South Carolina's default public-road rules allow a permitted golf cart only during daylight hours, on secondary highways posted at 35 mph or less, and within 4 miles of its registered address. For an address inside a gated community, the default distance is measured from a point of entry and exit. Municipalities may set operating hours, methods and locations by ordinance. These conditions do not establish permission on every low-speed road or inside private communities.

Registration and permits
For public-highway use, an ordinary golf cart needs an SCDMV permit decal and registration certificate. The owner must provide proof of ownership and liability insurance. The permit decal must be replaced every 5 years or when the owner changes address, whichever comes first. An LSV instead needs a qualifying manufacturer's certificate, title and vehicle registration; it carries an LSV license plate.
Low-speed vehicles (LSVs)
A registered low-speed vehicle (LSV) is a separate vehicle class. South Carolina requires it to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 500 and to be titled, registered and licensed like a passenger vehicle. It may operate on highways posted at 35 mph or less and cross faster highways at intersections, subject to applicable local and Department of Transportation restrictions. A golf cart retrofitted with lights does not qualify as an LSV under the state title rules.
Insurance
An ordinary golf cart needs liability insurance for public-highway operation; the driver must carry proof. Registered LSVs have the same insurance requirements as other motor vehicles under South Carolina law.
Driver requirements
On public highways, ordinary golf-cart drivers must be at least 16, hold a valid driver's license, and carry the license, registration certificate and proof of liability insurance. Passengers younger than 12 must wear a fastened safety belt on public streets and highways. LSV drivers must be at least 16, hold a valid driver's license, and carry it with the vehicle registration card. Rental companies may impose a higher minimum age.
Roads and crossings
Under the state default golf-cart rule, a permitted cart may cross a highway posted above 35 mph at an intersection. State LSV rules also allow crossings of faster highways at intersections. This guide does not identify or recommend a particular crossing.
Restricted areas
Hilton Head prohibits golf carts on publicly owned pedestrian and bicycle pathways. Its beach rules prohibit ordinary motor-vehicle driving on the sand, with exceptions for government, emergency and permitted vehicles and specified individual mobility vehicles. A beach-access parking area is different from the beach itself.
Know before you go
Know the vehicle class before booking: an ordinary golf cart and a registered LSV have different legal requirements. Confirm that your accommodation accepts the vehicle and where it can be parked overnight. The map covers selected Coligny/Forest Beach public roads; it does not establish driving permission within Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard or other private communities. It does not verify a complete route from your accommodation.

FAQs
Can I use Hilton Head's bicycle paths or drive onto the beach?
Golf carts are prohibited on public pedestrian and bicycle pathways. Ordinary recreational driving on the beach is prohibited too; the Town code has specific government, emergency, permit and mobility exceptions. Do not interpret a beach-parking location as permission to drive onto the sand.
Does this guide show every road where I can drive?
No. The map covers selected Coligny and Forest Beach public roads, with separate golf-cart and registered-LSV filters. It leaves gaps where road sections were not qualified and does not establish an island-wide route, private-community permission or access from a particular accommodation. Public bicycle paths and the beach are not cart routes.
